Russian ballistic missiles hit Kyiv and the surrounding region early Sunday, killing at least one person and injuring more than ten others in the latest attack on the Ukrainian capital.

Initial reports said the strikes sparked fires in homes, a supermarket and other buildings while air raid sirens sounded across the city. The full scale of the damage was not immediately clear.

The attack landed before dawn on Sunday, July 19, sending residents back into shelters in a city that has spent years under repeated missile and drone alerts since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Kyiv has often been targeted during overnight barrages, when air defence crews and emergency workers race to intercept missiles and reach damaged neighbourhoods before morning traffic resumes. This time, the reported casualties came from both the capital and nearby areas in the surrounding region.

The strike adds pressure on Ukraine’s emergency services at a moment when the war has already stretched cities far from the front line. Officials have not yet provided a complete breakdown of the buildings hit or the condition of the wounded.
