The Philippines has issued one of its strongest warnings yet about China’s growing activities in the South China Sea, arguing that regional tensions remain high despite recent diplomatic efforts between Washington and Beijing.
Speaking at the Shangri-La Dialogue security forum in Singapore, Philippine Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro said Manila continues to face serious pressure from Beijing over disputed maritime territories. He emphasized that recent U.S.-China diplomatic engagement has not changed conditions on the ground.
The South China Sea remains one of the world’s most strategically important waterways, carrying a significant share of global trade while serving as a major flashpoint between China and several Southeast Asian nations.
As military activity and maritime confrontations continue, regional governments are increasingly strengthening defense partnerships with the United States, Japan and Australia.
