When the internet entered mainstream life in the 1990s, its promise was revolutionary.
For the first time in human history, access to information would no longer be limited by geography, wealth or social status. A student in a small town could access knowledge previously available only in elite universities. Information would flow freely and citizens would become better informed.
Many believed the internet would create the most educated generation in history and in some ways, it did.
Within seconds, anyone can learn a new language, study world history, understand complex scientific concepts or access research from leading institutions. The amount of human knowledge available to the average person would have seemed almost unimaginable just a few decades ago.
And yet something unexpected happened.
Despite living in the most information-rich era ever created, many societies appear increasingly vulnerable to intellectual laziness, but also misinformation, conspiracy theories and dangerous political tribalism. Why is that?
Human beings evolved in a world where information was relatively scarce. Today we face the opposite challenge. Every day, people are exposed to more news, opinions, videos, posts and notifications than previous generations might have encountered in months.
The result is not greater understanding but simply greater confusion.
When information becomes unlimited, attention becomes a scarce resource. And the modern internet is designed to compete aggressively for that attention.
Social media platforms do not reward accuracy, they reward engagement. News feeds do not prioritize the most important information, they prioritize the information most likely to keep users scrolling. Outrage performs better than nuance. Certainty performs better than complexity. Emotion performs better than evidence.
Over time, these incentives shape the content people consume and, ultimately, how they think.
This helps explain one of the defining contradictions of the digital age. People are constantly informed, yet often poorly informed. They know more headlines but less context. They consume more content but spend less time reflecting on it.
As we all know, knowledge and information are not the same thing. Because true knowledge requires effort, considering alternative perspectives and accepting uncertainty when answers are complicated.
Artificial intelligence may intensify this challenge. As AI tools become capable of answering questions, summarizing articles and generating content, individuals will need to make even fewer intellectual efforts to obtain information.
The danger is not that people become less intelligent, but less curious.
Curiosity has always been the engine of learning. It drives people to question assumptions, explore unfamiliar ideas and challenge their own beliefs. Yet many digital platforms encourage the opposite behavior. Algorithms often feed users more of what they already agree with, creating comfortable information bubbles rather than intellectual exploration.
In the end, none of this means the internet has failed. The benefits remain extraordinary. Access to education, communication and knowledge has improved countless lives. Entire industries, careers and opportunities exist because of the digital revolution.
But the internet is a tool, not a guarantee. Its impact depends on how people use it.
The challenge facing society today is learning how to think clearly in a world where information never stops arriving. Because having access to knowledge and becoming wiser are two very different things.
And the internet, for all its power, can only help with one of them.
