Victor Willis, the founding lead singer of Village People and one of the voices behind disco’s most instantly recognizable hooks, has died at 74.

The group announced Wednesday that Willis died on Tuesday, June 30, after what it described as a short but aggressive illness. “We are profoundly sad to announce the death of VICTOR WILLIS, lead singer of Village People,” the band said in a statement.

Willis helped create the act in 1977 with French producers Jacques Morali and Henri Belolo. The concept was loud, theatrical and built for the dance floor: a group of performers taking on stylized characters that turned pop performance into visual shorthand.

Onstage, Willis often appeared as a policeman or naval officer. Around him, the original lineup included performers presented as a G.I., Native American, construction worker, cowboy and leatherman/biker, making Village People one of the most recognizable pop groups of the disco era.

Willis was also part of the songwriting engine behind the group. He co-wrote “Y.M.C.A.” and “Macho Man,” songs that outlived disco’s first wave and became fixtures at weddings, sports arenas, parades and karaoke nights across generations.

For many fans, Willis’ death lands as the loss of a voice tied to communal pop joy: hands in the air, letters spelled out, a chorus nearly everyone knows before they know why.

The band said no further details were being shared and asked the public to give the family space: “Privacy is requested.”
