Volkswagen officially unveiled a sweeping four-year strategic roadmap on Friday aimed at securing long-term profitability in the fiercely competitive electric vehicle market. The highly anticipated corporate overhaul, presented by CEO Oliver Blume at the automaker’s Wolfsburg headquarters, promises to aggressively streamline production and accelerate software development, but notably failed to extinguish mounting anxieties regarding potential factory closures and mass layoffs across Europe.

The newly minted strategy, dubbed “Accelerate 2030,” commits to slashing administrative overhead by 20% and reducing vehicle production times by nearly a third to better compete with nimble Chinese rivals and Tesla. Blume announced that the company will dramatically consolidate its platform architectures and push forward a multi-billion-euro joint venture with Rivian to salvage its struggling software division, Cariad. However, when pressed by labor representatives during the presentation, executives refused to definitively rule out the closure of legacy combustion-engine plants in Germany, citing unprecedented pressure on profit margins and lagging EV demand on the continent.

The ambiguity surrounding the future of Volkswagen’s sprawling European workforce immediately sparked backlash from IG Metall, Germany’s powerful industrial union. Union leaders warned that the four-year plan risks alienating the company’s core workforce just as industrial relations hit historic lows. As the automaker prepares to launch a new wave of entry-level electric models priced under €25,000, analysts note that Volkswagen must delicately balance its ruthless cost-cutting ambitions with the intense political and social blowback of shrinking its domestic manufacturing footprint.
