Brazil’s government is facing growing political resistance as it pushes forward with new efforts to regulate social media platforms and combat online disinformation.

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s administration argues that stronger rules are necessary to protect democratic institutions and prevent the spread of extremist content. Critics, however, warn that some proposals could create concerns about censorship and government oversight of digital speech.

The debate has become one of the most important political issues in Latin America’s largest democracy, particularly as social media continues playing a central role in elections and public discourse.

Brazil’s approach is being closely watched by governments around the world facing similar questions about how to regulate online platforms without restricting free expression.
