Global energy markets were thrown into chaos on Wednesday as oil prices skyrocketed by more than 8%, completely reversing their recent descent to four-month lows. The massive price spike followed an announcement from the Pentagon that the United States military launched a series of targeted airstrikes against Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps positions, shattering a fragile interim peace agreement. International benchmark Brent crude futures jumped 8.6% to $76.96 a barrel, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude surged 8.5% to $73.60 a barrel.

The pre-dawn precision strikes targeted drone storage facilities, coastal missile batteries, and command centers along Iran’s southern coastline. Washington justified the action by citing intelligence of an imminent threat of coordinated Iranian swarm-drone attacks against commercial tankers in the critical Strait of Hormuz. The bombardment caught observers by surprise, occurring on the penultimate day of Iran’s massive six-day state funeral for late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

The military escalation has dealt a catastrophic blow to regional diplomacy, permanently derailing indirect U.S.-Iran negotiations in Doha. In response to the strikes, Iranian diplomats withdrew from the negotiation table, declaring the previous truce null and void. With Iran entering high military alert, analysts fear an unconstrained cycle of retaliation could drive crude oil past the $100-per-barrel threshold.
