X Adds Video Editor As It Tries To Clean Up Recycled Clips

In an effort tomake its timeline look less like a repost machine, X has launched a new video editor and recorder in its iOS app, adding tools aimed at creators who want to make clips directly inside X rather than reposting material that first went viral somewhere else.

Nikita Bier, X’s head of product, said the update includes caption overlays in multiple languages, options to customize how those captions look, and a green-screen feature that lets users add backgrounds from camera-roll photos or other X posts.

“Today we’re launching a brand new Video Editor and Recorder in the iOS app,” Bier wrote in a post on X. He added: “We have plenty more updates coming to the video editor in the coming weeks.”

The rollout is partly about giving creators more reasons to make native posts on X. Bier said the goal was to build a “functional” editor so more clips on the platform can “finally be original content that doesn’t exist on other platforms.”

But the problem X is describing is not just creative laziness. Bier said many posts from top accounts still use stolen material, sometimes years after the original clip first circulated widely.

That matters because reposted video can still generate attention and money. X pays some creators, but it also continues to face complaints over bots, spam and recycled posts that can crowd out original work.

Bier said in April that X was identifying and suspending “208 bots per minute and growing.” He has also said video posts account for close to half of impressions on the platform.

The new editor is available first on iOS. Bier said Android will have to wait because that app is still being rebuilt.
