The Hungarian state-owned news channels made history by abruptly going dark to issue an unprecedented on-air apology to viewers. The main public television channel, M1, and Kossuth Rádió suspended their regular programming, replacing it with a startling black-screen message: “Public media must not lie. We apologize for having done so for many years.”

This drastic Hungarian public media overhaul was ordered by newly elected Prime Minister Péter Magyar, whose Tisza party ousted longtime nationalist leader Viktor Orbán in a historic landslide victory. Magyar, who campaigned on a strict promise to dismantle a 16-year apparatus of state-sponsored propaganda, appointed an interim management team that immediately cleared out Orbán-era leadership and suspended all ongoing news operations.

While classical music temporarily filled the radio waves, M1 symbolically resumed broadcasting. Orbán quickly slammed the sudden blackout on social media as an act of tyranny, but Magyar declared that the era of institutional deceit has finally ended as his administration begins rebuilding a genuinely independent public service.
