Indonesian Military Recovers Body of American Pilot Killed by Papua Separatists

A Papuan separatist group has killed an American pilot in Indonesia’s eastern highlands, an attack confirmed by Indonesian authorities who recovered his body on Friday, adding intense international pressure to a localized and long-running conflict.

Sebby Sambom, a spokesman for the West Papua National Liberation Army (TPNPB), claimed responsibility for the ambush. Sambom stated that the group’s fighters shot pilot Nicholas F. Gosselin shortly after his civilian aircraft landed in the Balinggama district of Yahukimo in Highland Papua province. The aircraft was subsequently set on fire.

Sambom described the fatal attack as a direct “message” to both the Indonesian and US governments. He accused the civilian aircraft of frequently dropping Indonesian military personnel into the region and violating the TPNPB’s strict ultimatums regarding flight operations.

Updating earlier, more cautious reports, the Indonesian military confirmed the fatality on Friday morning. Joint police and military forces successfully reached the remote airstrip in Yahukimo and recovered Gosselin’s remains from the burned wreckage.

Military spokespeople confirmed that while the pilot was targeted and killed, the seven indigenous Papuan civilian passengers on board the flight were left unharmed by the militant group.

Papua, the resource-rich western half of the island of New Guinea, has been the scene of a persistent, low-level independence conflict since Indonesia took control of the territory. The security situation has deteriorated in recent years, with attacks becoming deadlier as armed independence factions obtain better weaponry and increasingly target foreign nationals and infrastructure to draw global attention to their cause.
