U2 have turned a Mexico City street scene into the launchpad for their next chapter, releasing the Jacknife Lee-produced single “Street Of Dreams” as the first taste of their forthcoming album.
The video puts the band on top of a spray-painted bus as fans chase and gather around them in the city. The band had teased the shoot with the caption: “Hopped a bus in Mexico City, destination: Street of Dreams,” adding, “Justice an obsession, love is procession down the street of dreams.”
Then the weather joined the production. U2 said heavy rain and thunder “crashed the generator for the film shoot,” before a “bewildered but welcoming neighbour” allowed them to use a balcony while they led fans through singalongs of “Vertigo” and “Desire.”
The track leans into The Edge’s ringing guitar sound, while Bono moves between Spanish and English, singing: “La calle, calle de los sueños / All the doors are open on the street of dreams.”
For longtime fans, the video also carries a quieter headline: drummer Larry Mullen Jr. appears with the band after missing U2’s Las Vegas Sphere residency in 2023 and 2024 while recovering from back surgery.
U2 have been working toward their 15th studio album and have already released two EPs of new music this year. Bono previously said the band were “in the studio, still working towards a noisy, messy, ‘unreasonably colour xerox’ album to play LIVE.”
The new album would be U2’s first full record of new songs since 2017’s “Songs Of Experience.” The band will mark its 50th anniversary in September.
