HP is moving OpenAI tools from experiments into the plumbing of its own business, a fresh test of whether generative AI can speed up work inside a global hardware company without scattering unmonitored bots across departments.
The company began testing OpenAI Frontier in February 2026 and has now scaled the integration across global operations. The rollout connects access controls, company context, data and evaluation metrics so teams can use ChatGPT and Codex in more controlled settings.
Engineering is the first proof point. One HP engineer used OpenAI models to process 122 pull requests across 43 projects in a few weeks. Its security division used the same models to resolve several software bugs in one day, work internal estimates said would normally take a month.
“It has been an amazing tool, and I am using it daily,” an HP engineer said.
HP is splitting the work between models. ChatGPT instances handle research, data analysis, ideation and workflow triggers. Codex handles software tasks, including app planning, interface scaffolding and parallel delivery work.
The rollout reaches beyond coders. More than 80% of HP’s business moves through channel partners, and over 100,000 partners use the HP Partner Portal. AI agents are being used to guide users through program navigation, business information, stock limits and warranty routing.
HP also plans to apply Frontier to its Workforce Experience Platform, where CIOs track device fleets. The model can analyze telemetry, runbooks and device health signals to investigate application hangs, Wi-Fi errors and crashes.
The company is presenting security operations as both a test case and a guardrail. HP security teams use ChatGPT to address vulnerabilities, with estimates projecting about 82 hours a week of security-team capacity freed by automation. Human review remains part of the deployment controls.
