A real-world comic book scenario is unfolding on the streets of central Mexico, dividing local communities and triggering an active manhunt by state authorities. Over the last two weeks, a mysterious vigilante dubbed the “Batman of Lagos de Moreno” has taken the law into his own hands, leaving a trail of bound, painted, and publicly humiliated theft suspects tied to lampposts across the city.
What started as a localized rumor has rapidly evolved into a national social media phenomenon, shedding light on deeper systemic frustrations with street-level crime and judicial inertia in the state of Jalisco.
The Gotham-Style Method
The anonymous vigilante’s operational template is remarkably consistent. Working under the cover of darkness, the individual—or a coordinated group—tracks down alleged motorcycle thieves. Rather than turning them over to local precincts, the vigilante subjects them to a ritualistic form of public shaming.
As seen in viral images circulating across platforms like X and TikTok, the suspects are wrapped tightly from chest to knees in industrial silver duct tape.
Before vanishing into the night, the so-called “Batman” leaves behind a clear signature. The suspects are found with their faces marked in thick black ink, including fake handlebar moustaches, cat whiskers and the word “RATERO,” meaning thief, written across their foreheads.
The scene is often staged with the allegedly stolen motorcycles placed neatly on the curb in front of the restrained men, adding to the vigilante-style message. Bright pink or yellow signs are also taped nearby, listing the crimes the suspects are accused of committing and serving as a warning to others.
At least five men have reportedly been found in similar circumstances across several neighborhoods over a 10-day period.
A Community Divided: Justice vs. Lawlessness
The public reaction to the vigilante has highlighted a massive rift between statutory law and public sentiment. On social media, local community forums are overwhelmingly supportive. Frustrated by a perceived lack of police response to a spike in petty crime and vehicle thefts, many residents view the anonymous figure as a folk hero doing the job the state cannot—or will not—do.
However, human rights organizations and security experts warn that glorifying vigilantism is a slippery slope.

Legally, the state is treating the bound men not as caught criminals, but as victims of unlawful confinement, kidnapping, and aggravated assault.
Emergency responders who freed the men reported that several of the suspects had been severely beaten before being taped to the lampposts, with two requiring immediate hospitalization for internal trauma. Furthermore, because no formal legal complaints have been filed by the owners of the “returned” motorcycles, prosecutors face the paradoxical reality of having clear evidence of a vigilante assault, but no legal ground to hold the alleged thieves.
